Robot of the Week

Every Monday, we feature a robot worth knowing about — deep specs, real-world applications, and a UK business perspective.

Week 21 · May 2026

Boston Dynamics Spot

Category: Legged Inspection Robot · Origin: USA

Spot is arguably the world's most recognisable robot outside of science fiction. It has moved from research lab to genuine industrial deployment in just five years — and it is increasingly common on UK construction sites, offshore platforms, and utility networks.

Its key differentiator is terrain handling. Where wheeled AMRs require flat floors, Spot climbs stairs, navigates rubble, and operates in environments that would destroy conventional equipment.

The price (around £70,000) remains steep for most SMEs, but leasing and inspection-as-a-service models are making it accessible.
